If because of space constraints the machine cannot be switched on by pressing the front power button, it can be started with a separate remote control. You will find an appropriate four-pin connector on the back panel of the PC (pitch 2.54 mm).
The DisplayPort connector allows for connections with digital high-resolution displays. Depending on processor and display model resolutions of up to 4K/Ultra HD (3840x2160) can be achieved. Besides picture signal, DisplayPort cables can also lead digital sounds signals in excellent quality.
This machine is provided with a hardware solution to keep it permanently switched on (e.g. after a power outage). If you remove the jumper documented in the manual, the PC then starts as soon as the power supply is restored.
Multiformat card reader
At last – no more searching for missing digital camera leads. Simply insert the memory card and you can access all stored photos and videos immediately.
Goodbye cable spaghetti! Modern flat-screen TVs and large-format TFT screens can be connected to this Mini-PC with just a single thin cable. Often the audio output is also transferred in brilliant quality via the HDMI cable.

The fastest connection to external peripheral devices available to date
The USB 3.0 connectors of this model allow for data transfer of up to 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s). This enables external devices such as USB hard disks to be connected and run at nearly the same speed as their internal siblings. USB 3.0 is downward compatible so that also devices of previous USB generations can be hooked up.
Pre-assembled cabling saves time
The most important power and data cables are already routed and just have to inserted into the relevant components. This saves valuable time when setting up the system.

You can rely on SSD
This is where an energy-saving "Solid State Drive" should be used. This drive technology guarantees extremely short access times, the highest data transmission rates and considerably lower energy consumption compared to conventional hard disks. SSDs have no mechanical components at all, are therefore subject to less wear and tear and consequently benefit from a longer service life.
Just 2.5" HDDs
An extremely compact PC housing offers less space for drives, that's why this Mini-PC uses slimline 2.5-inch hard disks. The advantage of this is that there's less noise, less heat generated and reduced power consumption. However small hard disks in a small housing does not have to mean less memory. Modern 2.5" HDDs are every bit as good as their 3.5" brothers.
Fan-less external power supply
A highly effective external power supply provides the Shuttle Mini-PC with its energy. And since it works without a fan, it is completely noise-free.
Optimal air flow
Warm air is transported out of the chassis by means of cleverly arranged components, which enables a large number of parts to be cooled simultaneously in the air flow. At no time can heat build up and adversely affect the stability of the system.
The interface for the fastest of memory media
Internal drives to be used inside this Mini-PC can transfer data at a speed of up to 6 Gbit/s. Hard drives thus run significantly faster and brand-new media technologies such as SSDs can use their full potential. Be sure to look for SATA 6 Gbit/s.

 How to convert DisplayPort to HDMI/DVI?
The DisplayPort outputs can be converted to HDMI or DVI by an additional, passive adapter cable. For example:
DELOCK 82590: 1 m, DisplayPort (male, 20p) to HDMI-A (male, 19p)
DELOCK 82435: 5 m, DisplayPort (male, 20p) to DVI-D (male, 24p)
The integrated graphics automatically detects the connected display and puts out the appropriate electric signal - either through DisplayPort (without an adapter) or HDMI/DVI (with an adapter).
However, a monitor with a DisplayPort connector cannot be connected to the HDMI port with a simple, passive adapter.
 Three independent displays simultaneously
The Shuttle XPC slim Barebone DQ170 supports a maximum of two displays with the same input connector. For example: Two displays can be connected through HDMI input - the first one directly to the HDMI output, the second one to the DisplayPort output with an adapter. A third digital display, if required, must be connected directly to the DisplayPort output (without an adapter).
 4K Ultra-HD resolution
A 4K-display with Ultra-HD resolution (3840 x 2160) should only be connected via DisplayPort, as only this port supports a higher refresh rate of 60 Hz. Certain displays (e.g. Dell UP2414Q) however require MST mode (Multi-Stream Transport) to be enabled which sends two separate images at half resolution each to the display. These two images are then combined and put in correct order by the Intel graphics driver when in Collage mode. Please note that HBR2-mode (High Bit Rate 2) must be supported by each display to have more than one of them run at 4K resolution.
 Optional D-Sub/VGA connector
The mainboard features one analog graphics port CN6 on the mainboard. This signal can be lead to the outside as a 15-pin D-Sub VGA connector at the backpanel by using an optional adapter PVG01. However doing so means one serial port (COM) less can be used at the backpanel.
 Optional Wireless LAN module
The Shuttle XPC slim Barebone DQ170 supports an optional WLAN module, which consists of a half-size Mini-PCIe WLAN card and an external antenna with an appropriate antenna cable. Shuttle offers a suitable accessory kit "WLN-P" with two antennas.
 Notice - operating temperature
For high ambient temperatures over 40 °C we strongly recommend to use SSDs (supporting at least 70 °C) and rugged SO-DIMM memory modules with a temperature range of up to 95 °C.
 Power on after power fail
The BIOS setup provides a "Power-On-after-Power-Fail" function that can be found under "Power Management Configuration". As the name indicates, this function determines the PC's behaviour after power failure: (1) unconditional power on, (2) restore former status or (3) keep system turned off. As a matter of the nature of this function, it may fail after short power failures. This is why the DQ170 also comes with a hardware-based solution. By removing Jumper JP2 (on the mainboard behind the power button) the system will start unconditionally once power is supplied.
 Teaming Mode
The teaming function allows you to group both available network adapters together to function as a single adapter. The benefit of this approach is that it enables load balancing and failover.

 Serial Ports
This PC features two serial RS232 ports with 9-pin D-Sub connectors at the back panel. The left COM port (COM 1) can also be configured as RS422 and RS485 in the BIOS setup. The COM ports are protected by black plastic caps.
Pin 9 of the D-Sub COM-Port is a multi-functional signal. Based on the Jumper JP1 configuration on the mainboard, it can be configured as Ring Indicator (RI) or external power supply with a voltage level of either 5 V or 12 V. Each COM port can be configured separately. The maximum current is 500 mA per connector.
 Installation of Windows 7
Intel® 100 chipset series has removed support for the Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) which is the driver software for the USB 2.0 ports. The new chipset only supports the updated Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI for USB 3.0) which is not supported by the original Windows 7 installation disk. This means, that peripheral devices connected by USB (like keyboard, mouse and external optical drive) will not work during Windows 7 installation. To solve this, please add the required USB 3.0 drivers to the Windows 7 installation files - this procedure is explained in the Shuttle FAQ section at http://go.shuttle.eu/skylakewin7en.
